Clinical Evidence & Ocular PBM

Substantially stronger evidence than previously expected has emerged regarding photobiomodulation (PBM). Red and near-infrared photobiomodulation is now being intentionally delivered into human eyes in clinical research, and an ocular PBM system using 660 nm and 850 nm has received FDA authorization for a specific form of dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) (U.S. Food and Drug Administration).

Key Qualification: These studies establish safety for specific wavelengths, irradiances, exposure times, beam geometry, and treatment protocols. They don't automatically establish that every red/NIR laser—or your Revitalazer specifically—is universally unrestricted, but they confirm it is Safe for use in the eyes under proper context.

The Strongest Evidence: LIGHTSITE III Study

The newest and most comprehensive study is LIGHTSITE III, with its 24-month results published in Retina in 2026. It was a randomized, double-masked, sham-controlled trial involving 100 people and 148 eyes with dry AMD (PubMed).

The device deliberately delivered 590 nm, 660 nm and 850 nm light to the eyes. Patients received nine treatments over 3–5 weeks, with treatment series repeated every four months for two years. Researchers reported improved best-corrected visual acuity and a “favorable safety profile” with “no signs of phototoxicity.” (2026 LIGHTSITE III study on PubMed)

This is particularly interesting for your red/IR Revitalazer because 660 nm and 850 nm both fall within your stated 660–870 nm range.

FDA Authorization & Technical Review

In November 2024, the FDA authorized the Valeda Light Delivery System for certain patients with dry AMD, using three LEDs at different wavelengths (U.S. Food and Drug Administration).

The projected treatment beam was approximately 31 mm across, and the FDA's review specifically included an optical-radiation safety assessment under ANSI Z80.36-2021 for ophthalmic instruments (FDA Technical Review / Access Data).

This establishes that 660-nm red light at a measured 65 mW/cm² is deliberately delivered at the patient's corneal plane in an FDA-authorized ophthalmic device, proving red light entering the eye is not inherently unsafe simply because it is red PBM.

Direct 670-nm Human Research

A separate human pilot study used a handheld 670-nm light source aimed directly at the eye at 40 mW/cm² for 2 minutes (4.8 J/cm²), finding improvements in scotopic (low-light) thresholds in normal aging (PubMed).

Another trial treated dry AMD eyes with 670-nm LED light at 50 mW/cm² (4 J/cm² per dose), reporting visual acuity improvements with no adverse effects and no abnormalities detected by OCT or electroretinography (PubMed). This is exceptionally close to your Revitalazer's 660–870 nm range.
